The Role of Cultural Heritage in Enhancing Tourism Competitiveness and Local Economic Development in Uzbekistan

Cultural heritage is a core resource of Uzbekistan's tourism sector. Located at the centre of the Great Silk Road, the country holds a rich tangible and intangible heritage, from the historic cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and Shakhrisabz to living traditions such as Shashmaqom, Navruz and traditional crafts. This paper examines how heritage resources strengthen the competitiveness of Uzbekistan as a destination and contribute to local economic development. A destination competitiveness framework was applied to a qualitative analysis of policy documents, official tourism statistics and international practice. Heritage-based tourism increases destination uniqueness, lengthens stays, raises per-capita spending and stimulates accommodation, catering, transport and handicraft sectors. Visitor flows remain concentrated in a few cities, and service quality and digital interpretation lag behind in the regions. Integrating heritage conservation with tourism strategy, through thematic regional routes, sustainable visitor management, community partnerships and digital tools, can turn heritage into an instrument of inclusive regional growth.Downloads
