COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS IN ENGLISH

Abstract

The study is aimed at exploring the linguistic characteristics of countable and uncountable nouns in the English language in terms of their implications in second language acquisition and the teaching strategies. The paper will examine the differences between countables and uncountables and the most common difficulties encountered by the learners, especially the use of articles, plurality, and quantifiers. Descriptive methodology was used, where the analysis involved the mistakes committed by learners when using EFL classrooms and comparing the same to the correct application of countable and uncountable nouns in the English language. The findings indicate that an enhanced comprehension of such distinctions can contribute to the enhancement of language competence to a considerable degree. In addition, descriptive methods of teaching, like practice in a context and task based learning may assist learners to prevent typical mistakes and become more accurate. The research results of this paper are oriented to enlighten the practices in pedagogy and improve the instruction of countable and uncountable nouns in the ESL/EFL activities.
