Abstract

This article examines the role of phraseology, phrasal verbs, and idioms in the English language, with particular attention to their semantic, structural, communicative, and cultural characteristics. Phraseological units constitute an important part of language because they enable speakers to express ideas, emotions, attitudes, and cultural concepts in conventionalized forms. The article discusses the concept of phraseology and distinguishes among major types of multi-word expressions, focusing specifically on phrasal verbs and idioms. It explores the difficulties that English language learners may encounter when interpreting non-literal meanings and using phraseological expressions appropriately in communication. Particular attention is given to the cultural dimension of idioms and the importance of contextual interpretation. The article also considers the significance of phraseological competence for foreign-language learning and translation, emphasizing the limitations of word-for-word translation and the need to identify functional and culturally appropriate equivalents. The study concludes that systematic instruction in phraseological expressions can contribute to learners’ communicative competence, lexical development, translation skills, and intercultural awareness.
