COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF EASTERN AND WESTERN LITERARY TRADITIONS: BASED ON MOTIFS AND IMAGES
Keywords:

This article provides an in-depth comparative analysis of Eastern and Western literary traditions by focusing on recurring motifs and symbolic imagery that define the cultural and philosophical identities of each tradition. Drawing from classical and contemporary texts, the study explores how universal themes—such as love, heroism, fate, spirituality, and the struggle between good and evil—are differently constructed and interpreted in Eastern and Western literary canons. The Eastern tradition, with its roots in Sufi mysticism, Confucian philosophy, Buddhist thought, and epic narratives such as Shahnameh, One Thousand and One Nights, and The Tale of Genji, often emphasizes inner reflection, harmony with nature, collective consciousness, and cyclical worldviews. In contrast, the Western tradition, influenced by Greco-Roman mythology, Christian theology, Enlightenment rationalism, and Renaissance humanism, tends to foreground individualism, linear progress, moral dichotomies, and existential struggles. The article delves into how archetypal characters—such as the wise sage in the East and the tragic hero in the West—are manifested in the literary imagery and how metaphorical language conveys deep moral and philosophical messages. By analyzing selected works from renowned authors like Rumi, Ferdowsi, and Bashō in the East, and Homer, Dante, and Shakespeare in the West, the article highlights both convergence and divergence in literary expression. Special attention is given to the symbolic use of nature, divine intervention, journeys (both spiritual and physical), and representations of love and death. This comparative lens not only reveals the unique aesthetic and moral sensibilities of each tradition but also underscores the potential for intercultural dialogue and mutual enrichment. The article ultimately argues that understanding these literary motifs and images is essential for fostering a global literary literacy that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries. Furthermore, the analysis invites educators, scholars, and students to revisit canonical texts through a more integrative and holistic approach, appreciating both distinctiveness and universality in world literature.Downloads
