STRATEGIES OF IMPROVING READING SKILLS

Abstract

This article explores the most effective strategies for improving reading skills among EFL learners. Drawing on research in second language acquisition and reading pedagogy, it identifies key techniques such as extensive reading, vocabulary enhancement, metacognitive strategy training, and the use of authentic materials. The study highlights how active engagement with texts, prediction, inferencing, summarizing, and monitoring comprehension help learners move from surface-level reading to deeper textual understanding. Additionally, the article emphasizes the role of motivation, learner autonomy, and targeted teacher feedback in fostering long-term improvement. By understanding these strategies, educators can create more effective instructional practices and support students in developing strong reading proficiency.
