THE ROLE OF CHATGPT IN PROMOTING LEARNER AUTONOMY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly ChatGPT, has created new opportunities for English language learning and has the potential to promote learner autonomy by supporting more independent and personalized learning. This study aims to explore the role of ChatGPT in promoting learner autonomy in English language learning. A qualitative literature-based approach was adopted, with relevant academic studies identified through Google Scholar using keywords related to ChatGPT, learner autonomy, English language learning, self-directed learning, and teacher guidance. The selected studies were reviewed and analyzed to identify key themes concerning the benefits and challenges of ChatGPT in autonomous learning. The findings indicate that ChatGPT can support learner autonomy through immediate feedback, personalized interaction, and opportunities for self-directed learning. However, concerns about inaccurate information and learner overreliance highlight the importance of critical use and appropriate teacher guidance.
