GREETING FORMULAS IN UZBEK AND ENGLISH DIALOGUES

Abstract

Greeting formulas play a crucial role in shaping social relationships, constructing politeness, and marking cultural identity in any speech community. This study examines the linguistic, socio-pragmatic, and cultural characteristics of greeting expressions in Uzbek and English dialogues. As greetings serve not only to initiate communication but also to index social distance, power relations, and interpersonal solidarity, their analysis allows for a deeper understanding of cross-cultural communicative competence. The research identifies common structural patterns, semantic nuances, pragmatic intentions, and culturally embedded values reflected in greeting forms of both languages. Comparative findings reveal that while Uzbek greetings emphasize collectivism, respect, and hierarchical relationships, English greetings tend to focus on individualism, brevity, and efficiency.
