Abstract

This article analyzes politeness strategies used in English and Uzbek from a comparative pragmatic perspective. The main aim of the study is to identify the politeness devices employed in communicative interactions within the two linguistic cultures, to highlight their similarities and differences, and to explain the influence of cultural–pragmatic factors on communication. In the course of the research, linguopragmatic analysis, discourse analysis, and comparative methods were applied. As research material, more than 100 speech samples in English and Uzbek were examined, including examples from everyday conversations, formal correspondence, and mass communication. The findings indicate that politeness strategies in English are mainly oriented toward respecting individual autonomy and maintaining personal space. Therefore, mitigating expressions such as “please,” “could you,” and “would you mind” are widely used to soften requests and maintain polite interaction. In contrast, politeness in Uzbek communication is more strongly connected with social respect, as well as factors such as age, social status, and hierarchy. Linguistic units such as “iltimos” (please), “marhamat” (you’re welcome/please), “rahmat” (thank you), and “uzr” (sorry), along with various forms of respectful address, play an important role in Uzbek communicative culture. In addition, the frequent use of grammatical markers expressing respect and politeness is characteristic of Uzbek speech etiquette. The results of the study demonstrate that politeness strategies in both linguistic cultures play a significant role in increasing the effectiveness of communication. However, their usage is closely connected with the socio-cultural values and norms of each society. The findings of this research have important theoretical and practical implications for the fields of linguopragmatics, translation studies, and intercultural communication, as they provide a solid basis for organizing effective interaction in both English and Uzbek linguistic environments.
