Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is a critical component of language learning, particularly in school English classrooms where students often struggle to retain and effectively use new words. This study explores the efficacy of two pedagogical strategies—games and translation techniques—in enhancing vocabulary retention and usage among students. Games, which include activities such as word puzzles, memory matching, and interactive quizzes, are hypothesized to engage students through active learning and reinforce vocabulary through repetition and contextual usage (Nation, 2001; Schmitt, 2008). Translation techniques, on the other hand, involve the use of students' native language to provide clear semantic understanding and facilitate the transfer of vocabulary knowledge (Cook, 2010; Laufer & Girsai, 2008). This research underscores the importance of innovative and interactive teaching methods in fostering effective vocabulary acquisition and overall language proficiency.
